Goldfish and Beta Fish are riffs on Matisse and contain the jewel like colors from his paintings. I have goldfish in ponds outside my studio and had a Beta fish at one time. These fascinating fish have such vibrant color which changes constantly as they flash through the water. The subject of an interior with a view to an exterior space is one seen throughout art history as an exploration of light and shadow.

The clouds swirl overhead meeting the mountains and obscuring the horizon. The colors of the tulips and buildings create a rhythm uniting the distinct bands of color.

Farm Below the Mountain is an abstracted view of mountains, farm buildings and fields dotted with crops and hay bales. The vivid colors bring a sense of joy and celebration to the scene and reference the Nabis, French painters whose bold simplified style acted as a bridge from Impressionism to to Modernism. They included Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard who believed that art was a synthesis of symbols and metaphors created by the artist.

The Red House is an abstracted landscape with strong shadows and light with a house just visible behind some trees. It may remind us of being a child and coming home to a welcoming and familiar place. The deep periwinkle sky hints at a perfect, cloudless day full of promise. While the painting shows depth with the house pushed back in the distance, the flattened shapes of color remind us that this can also be read as a series of abstract shapes.

Out Buildings plays on the use of opposite colors on the color wheel, in this case, red and green. The simple structures lead our eye back with the receding sizes of the simple sheds suggesting distance. The vague shapes at the horizon could be foliage and another building. The shapes are simplified and remind us that this painting can also be read an abstract painting.

Sunflower Fields comes from my own experience of growing these remarkable stalks in my own garden. By late summer they tower above me and at times are filled with the dance of goldfinches who seek out the seeds in the massive heads. The linear progression of fields suggests distance but the whole scene is also flattened by the bands of color and absence of a  visible horizon line.

Small Garden with Tulips has a background that suggests a garden plan with divided beds and meandering paths. The flowers burst from these careful divisions, spreading out to catch the light, happily coloring outside the lines.

Green Garden shows my own garden at dusk with “pink sky at night” promising “sailor’s delight” or fair weather. The olive and gold colors suggest that it is late summer as the first tints of autumn seep into the landscape. The sky is animated above the distant fields.

Monday Blues is a copy of a Matisse painting which is a study in how to paint a nude in a perfect square shape. The white lines are incised into the paint with the tip of the brush handle. Matisse returned to the theme of the nude with crossed legs in paint and cutouts throughout the later years of his life.

Cathedral Walk II has elements of the vertiginous climbs in churches that lead to high viewpoints and also to the tiny gardens that line the outer walls and buttresses. Is the large dark shape a shadow or the river? The scrolls suggest decorative ironwork found both inside and outside of cathedrals. All of these elements are carefully laid out in the neat grid-like way that defines city centers in France.

Evensong refers to a service featuring hymns and prayers offered as night is falling. The lavender blue of the sky and mountains suggest stained glass windows and the warm glow of the last light of day references candles lit in prayer and commemoration.

Gold and Green Fields is an abstracted view of purple flowers, iris perhaps, marching toward the distant fields that merge and melt against the sky. The bright contrasting colors flatten the painting while the receding sizes of the shapes give a sense of great distance providing tension in this image.

Cedars show a progression of evergreens marching off into the distance. This is a classic way to indicate distance and the horizontal slashes of dark green suggest a further stand of these trees which tend to spring up along fence lines on farms where they escape animal grazing and mowing. The ripple of a stream echoes the deep blue of a cloudless sky and the mountains are a more misty blue suggesting the moisture that gives our Blue Ridge mountains their distinctive color.

House by the Stream shows a modest building, perhaps no longer in use as a dwelling but more likely as a storage building. It sits beside a stream and was painted as the foliage had begun to turn in fall.

October Trees I was painted on site at a friend’s farm. It celebrates the colors of autumn in an abstracted spare composition. The light infusing the painting records the time outside as migrating flocks of birds rose from the forest and the air gathered warmth throughout the day.

October Trees II is a faithful rendering of a scene at a friend’s farm. It was painted entirely on site and captures both the shapes of the trees as well as the negative spaces between the branches. The painting was done on two consecutive mornings so as to record the sunlight coming through the trees at the same time of day.

Golden Fields was painted mostly onsite and features a prominent pine tree which fell in a storm not long after. It captures the golden light that permeates everything as the leaves and grasses take on their fall color. This painting reminds me that nature, like life, is ever-changing.

A few tall blades of grass catch the light while the mountains are mostly in shadow.  It is evening when the temperature suddenly drops and a slight breeze ripples around us. If we look away we will miss this fleeting moment so we stand still and celebrate the end of another fine day.

Ravens Roost I and II record sunset at a favorite overlook on The Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. This rocky outcrop overlooks a large valley and is a popular spot for hiking. The mountains and sky begin to merge in a haze of blue as the last rays of the sun leak from the sky and the vegetation holds the last golden light of day.

In Flooded Creek water hurtles across the lower portion of the painting echoed by the churning clouds above. Two trees stand close to the water threatened with flooding, their branches melding with the active sky.  It is a common scene during spring when snowmelt combines with heavy rain to produce high water. The large boulders with their rhythm of weighty shapes anchor the swirling and active marks in the of the painting.

Leaves and Vines began with a series of wet paint lines being allowed to drip as I manipulated the panels to force the drips to curl in different directions. This was a way to mimic the tendrils of vines as they grow toward the light while at the same time being weighted down by the weight of the leaves. Some marks were edited out as leaves and suggestions of seed pods were added. Random chance and careful decisions play equal part in these exuberant paintings.

Paris View is an architectural study of rooftops with the clay chimney pots marching off into the distance. Swirls of ironwork suggest balcony railings and a bit of vine winds its way up from an unseen flowerpot. The warm color of stonework contrasts with the cool blue gray light of the French Capital.

Geraniums is a study of light. The geraniums are lit by intense sunlight picking out some of the petals and leaves while other parts are left in shadow. The large copper pot is lit by both sunlight and the reflections of petals. This painting is a nod to both Dutch still life paintings and Rembrandt Peale’s painting of his brother Rubens with a geranium. The American painter Charles Willson Peale named many of his children after famous artists.
